Panama files complaint to UN over Trump’s threats to seize Canal

The Panamanian government has filed a complaint with the United Nations over US President Donald Trump's threat to seize the Panama Canal. In a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the Panamanian government referred to an article of the UN Charter that prohibits any member from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of another state. The letter called on the UN Secretary-General to refer the issue to the Security Council.During his inauguration speech as US President, Trump reiterated his accusations regarding China's management of the Panama Canal, and once again indicated that China had taken control of this vital waterway. He added that the United States will ‘take back’ the Panama Canal. The US relinquished control of the waterway to Panama in 1999 under a treaty signed in 1977 under President Jimmy Carter.
