When you think of calligraphy, don’t picture pretty writing on paper. A first-of-its-kind month-long biennale is being held in Dubai to honor old Arab art. The art is being used to add style to abayas, jewelry, and fabric and Sheikh Zayed’s poem.
From now until the end of October, the first Dubai Calligraphy Biennale will feature more than 19 shows in 35 different places. These will feature some of the best calligraphers in the country.
In the past, calligraphy was used to decorate buildings and personal items. Later, it evolved into a way to show art and communicate visually. It still shapes a lot of talented people today.
A show at the Al Safa Art and Design Library had a number of pieces that art fans would have loved:
Sisters Hessa and Fatma Ali Aljoker came up with the idea for this dress, which they call Pearla. Together with the skilled calligrapher Diaa Allam, the sisters had a song about the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who founded the UAE, hand-written on this lovely white dress.
Some beautiful designs were made by writing in calligraphy on jewelry. Verse from Surah Al Fatiha, the first chapter of the Holy Quran, are carved into this black ring.
The maktoum cuff is a piece of jewelry by Nadine Kanso that she calls “organized chaos.” It is from the Bilarabi collection and is made up of different letters with different heights that look like building designs.
The name of this dress that Areen made is “The Portrayal of Paradise.” It has an abstract geometric design of calligraphy instead of letters and looks at how different cultures see paradise.
Feryal Albastaki, an artist and fashion designer, used the show to show how much she liked writing. Her picture and the writings of the famous Emirati poet Ousha al Suwaidi have been put together to make a beautiful jalabiya.

With writing, the simple abaya was turned into works of art & Sheikh Zayed’s poem calligraphic design. Letters of Art is an amazing collection by designer Shatha Essa that shows off the beauty of Arabic writing.
