The official welcome of Lionel Messi to Inter Miami was delayed on Sunday due to torrential rain and intense lighting, which resulted in a sold-out crowd of roughly 20,000 people.
At the La PresentaSIon ceremony at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, former FC Barcelona player Sergio Busquets was also officially signed by Miami. A contract was signed by the 35-year-old Spaniard that lasts through the 2025 campaign.
For 15 seasons, Busquets and Messi played together for Barcelona.
About two hours later than expected, the event began with damp but ecstatic spectators chanting Messi’s name as the lights darkened in the arena.
Opening the ceremony, Messi’s entrance was described as a “dream come true” by the club’s co-owner David Beckham.
“Leo, we are so proud that you have chosen our club for the next stage in your career,” said the ex-Manchester United player, whose 2007 transfer to the MLS’s Los Angeles Galaxy was the league’s largest ever.
After being introduced, Messi spoke to the crowd for a brief period of time before the team showed a memorial video on the scoreboard screen. The likes of DJ Khaled, Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Tom Brady, Stephen Curry, and others welcomed Messi to the country.
Messi replied in Spanish, “Thank you very lot to all the people for supporting me and giving me this love. “I’m delighted to be in Miami.
“I genuinely want to start working out and competing. I still have the same drive I always had to compete, to want to triumph, and to support the club’s expansion.
Regarding Busquets, he participated in Spain’s 2010 World Cup-winning team and has accumulated 143 caps for his country. He stopped competing for his country after the 2022 World Cup.
Due to the expiration of his contract with Barcelona this year, he had the chance to join Messi with the Herons.
In a press statement, Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas commented, “I am thrilled to welcome Sergio Busquets to Inter Miami.” “Our goal has been to bring the top players in the globe since day one. The work Sergio has produced speaks for itself.
Busquets stated in a news statement that he was thrilled to take advantage of this unique and interesting opportunity. I’m eager to take my profession to the next level with Inter Miami.
“The club pleased me when I visited it with Barcelona the previous year, and I’m now glad and prepared to represent the club on my own. I am eager to contribute to the success that this ambitious team seeks.
Busquets also has a strong bond with Gerardo “Tata” Martino, the recently hired Inter Miami coach who served as Barcelona’s manager during the 2013–14 campaign and who also has a strong relationship with Messi.
In the 29-team league, Inter Miami is having a difficult season and has the worst record (5-14-3, 18 points).
The Herons have lost all eleven of their MLS games (0-8-3), with their lone victory coming on May 13 at home against the New England Revolution by a score of 2-1.
