Like so many of us, I was deeply saddened to learn of Peter Hellyer’s demise. The finest part about Peter was that he was eager to share his extensive knowledge of the UAE and its history with everyone. Peter was a great man with a great soul. These are my personal reflections and ideas.
Years ago, I emailed him with a question about one of his writings about the Second World War and we began working together. I adhered to his guidelines, which evolved over time and helped us find and publish countless
You were able to recognize your own potential thanks to Peter, a talented mentor. He also had a lot of patience; despite the fact that he was constantly preoccupied with his own work, he made time to assist me with my own study, as I’m sure he did for countless others. His personal stories about life in the early United Arab Emirates and in his home Jersey were incredibly instructive and provided a window into a world we can only read about.
Even while it can be quite challenging to pinpoint the people who planted the seeds that eventually grow into a tree, Peter’s tireless work on the UAE and its rich history, which will endure, makes this very evident to us.
Today, my thoughts are with his family and all of us who he inspired, educated, and inspired to be better people in the UAE and around the world. Since he was a part of the history, culture, and heritage of the United Arab Emirates, he will undoubtedly be remembered by all of us as well as by future generations. His contributions and legacy, which have inspired so many of us, will also live on.
Peter, my dear friend I’m grateful.
