NATO Secretary-General urges European members to increase spending ahead of new Trump term

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Wednesday urged European countries to increase their defense spending ahead of a new era of US President-elect Donald Trump.Rutte told reporters following a NATO foreign ministers meeting in Brussels that the current benchmark spending would not be enough to keep the same deterrence within five years.NATO leaders approved a decade ago a move to commit two percent of GDP to military budgets. Yet, a third of the organization's member states are still unable to meet the targets.Trump slammed during his first term US allies who failed to meet NATO's defense budget targets, and threatened not to defend delinquent countries.
