34 killed, over 56,000 affected by severe floods in India

Indian authorities announced that at least 34 people were killed as a result of the severe floods and landslides that have struck the northeastern state of Manipur over the past four days, affecting more than 56,000 people.In a statement on Tuesday, authorities said that the floods have destroyed 10,477 homes and affected thousands of residents. Evacuation and relief efforts are ongoing in the affected areas. Authorities noted that one person was missing after being swept away by a river in the eastern city of Imphal on Monday.Furthermore, 2,913 people have been evacuated from affected areas. Meanwhile, reports indicate a new bridge breach in Bashkung in East Imphal, after the Kongba River breached its banks and submerged large areas.Local authorities have set up at least 57 relief camps, most of them in eastern Imphal, which is the hardest hit by the floods. A total of 93 landslides were recorded in various parts of the state over the past five days.Several areas in the provincial capital, Imphal, and large parts of East Imphal were submerged after rivers burst their banks and breached bridges in the Korai, Hingang, and Chikun areas, exacerbating the damage and making it difficult to reach the affected areas.
