EU welcomes formation of national authorities for transitional justice, missing persons in Syria

The European Union (EU) welcomed the formation of the National Authority for Transitional Justice and the National Authority for Missing Persons in Syria, considering it an important step towards the comprehensive justice and truth which the Syrian people deserve.’Efforts on transitional justice are fundamental to lay the groundwork for reconciliation and lasting peace in Syria. Investigating the fate of all missing persons will be a crucial step in bringing closure to families and communities affected,’ according to a statement issued by the spokesperson for EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.’We call on the transitional Syrian authorities to ensure that these efforts are carried out in a transparent, impartial, and inclusive manner, in line with international standards of justice. It is essential that relevant international bodies, as well as Syrian and international civil society organisations, be fully associated to these efforts,’ the statement said.The EU continues to support the Syrian people in their journey toward peace, stability, and justice, it added.
