Halting aid to Gaza is dangerous escalation, exacerbates humanitarian catastrophe – Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor

The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor expressed deep concern over the Israeli occupations decision to cut off all humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, in a dangerous escalation that exacerbates the humanitarian catastrophe and perpetuates starvation as a tool of genocide. The Euro-Mediterranean Monitor said in a statement that halting the entry of aid into the Gaza Strip comes at a time when inflammatory statements by officials in the occupation government against the residents of the Strip are escalating, reflecting the deliberate intention to continue this crime by depriving them of the basic necessities of life and imposing living conditions that lead to their actual destruction. The statement emphasized humanitarian aid as a basic right of the civilian population that is not negotiable under international humanitarian law, and there is no exception or legal justification that allows the occupation to deprive Palestinians of basic humanitarian aid.Israel is not content with using aid as a bargaining chip to achieve political or military gains, but is deliberately implementing a systematic policy of starvation, in an attempt to create deadly living conditions that make the survival of the population in Gaza impossible, the statement underlined. The human rights monitor explained that halting the entry of humanitarian aid and supplies effectively means a war of starvation against the residents of the Gaza Strip, given their complete dependence on aid for their food. The United Nations confirmed a few days ago that there are many difficulties in bringing humanitarian aid into the Strip and that the humanitarian conditions there have reached catastrophic levels. The Israeli occupation has not been satisfied with the widespread killing and massive destruction it has inflicted on the Gaza Strip over the course of more than 15 months, but rather continues to use policies that lead to the actual destruction of the population, by continuing the policy of gradual and slow killing, and imposing a comprehensive illegal siege that obstructs the flow of humanitarian aid and basic materials, and prevents the repair of vital infrastructure and the provision of basic services necessary for the survival of the population.Concluding its statement, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor urged the international community to assume its legal and humanitarian responsibilities regarding the necessity of implementing the International Court of Justices issuance on March 28, 2024, of precautionary measures obligating the occupation to take the necessary and effective measures, in cooperation with the UN, to ensure the entry of aid into the Gaza Strip without obstacles and without delay, in implementation of its obligations under the Genocide Convention.
