Calls to cease fire go unheeded : UN special coordinator in Lebanon

The UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert affirmed that ‘calls to cease fire go unheeded.’According to the Lebanese National News Agency (NNA), Plasschaert said in a post on the X platform on Monday: ‘Lost under the beating drums of war is the voice of the silent majority: the women, men, and children who find themselves, yet again, helpless facing an uncertain future. A harsh reality looms as the calls to cease fire go unheeded.’Two days ago, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed grave concern by the dramatic escalation of events in Beirut in the last 24 hours, stressing that this cycle of violence must stop now, and all sides must step back from the brink. He urges the parties to recommit to the full implementation of UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution 1701 and immediately return to a cessation of hostilities.Lebanon is exposed to extensive Israeli attacks targeting various Lebanese governorates and regions, especially villages and towns in southern Lebanon, which led to the killing and wounding of more than 3,000 people, while the residents of the targeted areas were forced to flee in a large wave of displacement.
