The UK will not retaliate immediately to the renewal of steel and aluminium tariffs by the US, the government has said.
UK's Trade Minister Douglas Alexander said the UK would not have ‘a knee-jerk reaction’ but ‘a cool and clear-headed’ response.
‘What British industry needs and deserves is not a knee-jerk reaction, but a cool and clearheaded sense of the UK’s national interest based on a full assessment of all the implications of the US actions,’ Alexander said.
He added that the UK had a ‘strong and balanced trade relationship’ with the US.
UK Steel said the tariffs ‘would be a devastating blow to our industry.’ US President Donald Trump signed two new executive orders on Monday imposing 25 percent tariffs on imported steel and aluminum
