Russia affirms non-withdrawal, support for WHO

Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations in Geneva Gennady Gatilov affirmed Sunday that Russia will not withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO) and will continue to use this platform for dialogue.Gatilov said in an interview with Sputnik that Russia will continue to use the WHO platform for mutually beneficial dialogue with all interested countries, pointing out that Russia's approach is consistent and directed towards supporting the UN system. The Permanent Representative stressed that modern challenges, especially in the field of health protection, are global in nature and can be effectively addressed only through joint cooperation. He explained that relevant multilateral efforts must be coordinated and targeted, revealing a special responsibility that falls on the shoulders of the WHO, which is granted by its constitution the function of directing and coordinating authority on international health work.Argentina announced its withdrawal from WHO several days ago, and US preceded it in that when US President Donald Trump announced his country's withdrawal by an executive order on his first day in office on January 21.
