NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte affirmed today that the trade war threats issued by US President Donald Trump will not weaken the alliance's deterrent power.
Speaking at a press conference alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Rutte acknowledged that disagreements among allies are not uncommon. However, he expressed confidence that such disputes would not undermine NATO members' collective commitment to maintaining the alliance's strength and deterrence capabilities.
‘The best course of action for the West is to remain united,’ Rutte emphasized.
His remarks come in response to the US president's recent decision to impose tariffs on Canada -a NATO member- and threats to extend similar measures to the European Union.
Today's meeting in Brussels brought together European Union leaders, the British prime minister, and the NATO secretary-general to discuss strategies for increasing defense spending amid rising tensions with Russia.
