Belarusian President wins Presidential election – preliminary results

Incumbent Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko won a new term in the presidential election that took place Sunday, according to preliminary results on Monday.According to preliminary data from the regional and Minsk city commissions, Lukashenko took 86.8% of the vote, the chairman of the Central Election Commission Igor Karpenko told a press conference.First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Belarusian Communist Party Sergey Syrankov was backed by 3% of the voters, he added.Voters in Belarus cast their ballots yesterday to elect a new president, with over 450 international observers from 49 countries monitoring the election. Five candidates, including incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko, have been registered for the presidential election.
