US President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of 2,000 California National Guard troops to Los Angeles in response to escalating protests sparked by recent US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids targeting undocumented immigrants. In a statement released by the White House, Trump said that move aims to ‘address the lawlessness that has been allowed to fester,’ as demonstrations intensify across the city for the second consecutive night.Protests have been particularly intense in the Paramount area of southeast Los Angeles, with multiple clashes reported between demonstrators and federal law enforcement.Earlier, Trump suggested in a post on his Truth Social platform that if California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass are unable to manage the situation, ‘then the Federal Government will step in and solve the problem, riots and looters, the way it should be solved!!!’Senior White House aide Stephen Miller described the protests as a ‘violent insurrection.’The first round of protests kicked off on Friday night after Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents conducted enforcement operations in the city and arrested at least 44 people on alleged immigration violations.
