Mexico deploys first military reinforcements to US border

A convoy of Mexican National Guard and Army trucks arrived at the border between Ciudad Juarez and El Paso, Texas. The first batch is among the first of 10,000 National Guard troops that Mexico said it would send to its northern border after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs, then announced a month-long delay.Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum promised to send the National Guard to bolster security on the border. The US, in turn, announced that it would make more efforts to stop the smuggling of American weapons into Mexico. The first Mexican troops arrived at the border two days ago, and members of the National Guard who participated in Wednesday's patrols confirmed that they were part of this new force. At least 1,650 troops are expected to be sent to Ciudad Juarez, making it one of the largest cities receiving reinforcements on the Mexican border, after Tijuana, which is scheduled to receive 1,949 troops.US President Trump and his Mexican counterpart Sheinbaum confirmed on Monday that they had reached a four-point agreement to suspend the tariffs imposed by the US on Mexico.During Secretary of State Marco Rubio's visit to Latin America, where migration was high on the agenda, the US diplomat thanked the Mexican government for sending the troops, according to a statement from the Mexican government.US Department of Defense officials confirmed early this month that there is a possibility of more US forces being deployed to help secure the southern border, with the possibility of additional forces being deployed, and the final number of deployed forces may reach about 10,000 soldiers.
