Canada announces 25% retaliatory tariffs on US imports

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada will impose 25% immediate retaliatory tariffs on US imports worth $30 billion starting Tuesday in response to the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on Canadian and Mexican exports.Trudeau explained that the Canadian tariffs would be applied in two phases. Immediate tariffs will be placed on US goods worth 30 billion Canadian dollars, followed by an additional $125 billion in 21 days to allow Canadian consumers and supply chains to find alternatives. The Canadian Prime Minister added that his government is considering non-tariff measures in response to Washington, including actions related to critical minerals, energy, procurement and other partnerships. He also emphasized that Canada is working in coordination with Mexico to address the US actions, urging Canadian citizens to support local products and boost domestic tourism. This development follows US President Donald Trumps decision to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports, and a 10% tariff on goods from China, starting Tuesday.Trump confirmed that these tariffs would remain in place until the national emergency declared due to the fentanyl crisis and illegal immigration to the United States is resolved.
