UN Secretary-General Antnio Guterres called on the warring parties in Sudan to meet their international legal obligations, emphasizing the need to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, and to ensure the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid.
In a statement issued today, Guterres expressed serious concern over the recent escalation of fighting, particularly around Al Jaili oil refinery north of Khartoum and in El Fasher, Darfur.
He once again urged the conflicting parties to engage in urgent dialogue to immediately halt fighting and prevent further harm to civilians. He stressed that a lasting resolution to conflict can only be achieved through an inclusive political process.
According to the statement, UN Secretary-General's personal envoy for Sudan, Ramadan Lamamra, continues his efforts to de-escalate conflict and encourage Sudanese-led, inclusive dialogue aimed at bringing an end to the war.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been locked in a brutal conflict between the military and the Rapid Support Forces, causing widespread civilian casualties, massive displacement, a refugee crisis, and significant damage to the country's infrastructure.
