South Korea’s National Assembly votes to impeach President Yoon

South Korea's National Assembly voted today to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over his over his botched imposition of martial law earlier this month. The impeachment motion held today against Yoon passed 204-85, with three abstentions and eight invalid ballots, after all 300 members of the Assembly cast their votes. This was the second vote on impeaching the president, after a failed attempt last Saturday when lawmakers from the ruling People Power Party, which Yoon leads, boycotted the session. The second motion, introduced last Thursday by the main opposition Democratic Party and five smaller opposition parties, accused Yoon of violating the constitution and other laws by declaring martial law on December 3. The declaration was revoked six hours later after the National Assembly voted to cancel it.The new motion included revised charges, dropping some from the previous attempt and adding others, such as allegations that Yoon ordered the military and police to arrest lawmakers during the brief period martial law was in effect.Just before the vote, People Power Party decided to participate in the session but announced its opposition to impeachment. The proposal will now go to the Constitutional Court for a final ruling. If upheld, Yoon will become South Korea's second president to be removed from office, following Park Geun Hye's impeachment in 2017.On December 3, President Yoon declared martial law, claiming it was necessary to eradicate pro-North Korean forces and safeguard the constitutional order. However, he rescinded the measure hours later after the National Assembly voted to repeal it.
